How does the music video product sell its artist to the audience?

I have chosen to analyze the music video done by “The pussycat dolls” when performing their song “Beep” featuring will.i.am. The pussycat dolls are a group of five that both sing and dance in their performances and is also known for producing songs about sex and attraction.
In the music video Beep this does not change and is adhering to the way that the pussycat dolls have been portrayed before. In their case using sexual attraction and magnetism to attract a special audience this is not only done as a group but is also individuals outside the group.

The music video begins by showing the artist in light clothing showing a lot of skin adhering to specific characters linked with feeling of innocence by having ponytails, blowing gum and so on. A lot of close-ups are also used to enhance the feeling of getting close to the artist. This will help fans to feel connected to the artists but also make the males more sexual attracted by the women in the video. The music video is following the lyrics of the song but is also suppose to represent the innocence in the characters but at the same time give a more independent and hard to get feeling towards the audience as well. The music video and the artist are therefore targeted at the audience of males that is sexually interested in the artist but also to the teenager female fans having them as role models. The tools used in the video such as clothing, camera angles/shots and more are used in specific ways to create specific ways of viewing the artist and also to target specific audiences.
The music genre that the song fits into would be pop music but also a bit of R’n’B which in most cases already fits the targeted audience but could bring in a bigger group of teenagers just thanks to the music. The expectations of a Pop/R’n’B music video are in many cases fulfilled in the video of the pussycat dolls by using a lot of dance and specific body language. In the case of this music video the artist are not playing the victim but instead a stronger character. This is often showed in R’n’B music video which in many cases might include more violence and anger in both lyrics and the story of the video.

The video continues by following the lyrics and includes independent sexy women turning down the men that want them. This is suppose to have an effect on the male audience, wanting to have what they can’t get and to attract them even more to the artist they use sexy body language and dance in the music video. The use of close-ups on skin and body part also increases to make sure that there is a temptation for the artists and that the audience is following the “narrative” of the music video.

Throughout the music video it is clearly shown that the importance is on the performance and dance of the artist and a clear sexual image is put across to the audience. But since there is also a sense of control and independence this has an impact on the female and younger audience. To enhance the relation to females even more they use a sense of group compassion between all the female characters in the music video. The quite complicated choreography is also a way to make the audience interested and fascinated by the artist and its products and can help to even target an more dance interested and related audience.

In the case of the pussycat dolls it is more about selling the whole image of the group and the make the audience find the music and their music products interesting but to manage this, a sexual behavior and attraction has to be put into place. This is done as mentioned before by having light clothes but also by them being colorful, this helps the audience to feel more invited. The colors also help the artists to reinsure that the audience is fully focused on them and the action and not everything around. The use of some few establishing shots and close-ups reinforces the feelings brought through by the singing and dancing and creates a more realistic view.

In regards of Richard Dyers theory the image of the pussycat dolls fits into meanings such as sexual magnetism and women rebellion. They clearly follow a know image that the audience can relate to and in Dyers case makes the audience wanting more from the artist. Dyers also claims that the artist has to create something ordinary as the same time as creating something extraordinary. In this case the artist are keeping to the ordinary of using sexual attraction to target an audience but also uses more of an attitude to create a more extraordinary view of rebellious women. Both the attitude and sexiness is built up by the dance and movements in the music video amongst all of the artists.

To summaries the analyze of the pussycat dolls music video “Beep” it is clear that the music video in concentrated on showing sexual elements in order to make the audience interested in the artists as both individuals but also as a group. The sexual elements aims towards men both the in the sense of considering the dance this could also target a younger audience such as teenagers. The attitude in the music video towards men and the opinions that is brought through is also important for the targeting of audience. This help to target a bigger female audience wanting to feel independent and so on, this is also done by the dance and body language used in the music video.

The image of the artists is throughout clear even though the elements of sexiness is quite obvious already in the beginning it gradually builds up more and more. By doing this it helps the audience to want more. This also gives a more convincing view of the artists, which also means that the music video has successfully sold its artist and the image it belongs to.
